Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the intrasession repeatability of the break-up time (BUT) measurements using the Sirius Scheimpflug photography-based system
Setting:
Oftalmar. Vithas Hospital Internacional Medimar. Alicante, Spain. Department of Optics, Anatomy and Pharmacology. University of Alicante, Spain
Methods:
The sample included 22 eyes of 22 patients (15 female and 7 male) with a mean age of 35.3+/-11.6 years (range 19 to 55 years). Mean sphere was -2.50+/-3.51 D and mean cylinder was -0.73+/-0.66 D. Examinations were performed using the specific Tear Analysis module of the Sirius system. Three consecutive measurements were obtained with this device to assess the intrasession repeatability of the device.
Results:
Mean time at which the first tear break-up time occurred (BUT1) was 9.02+/-4.55 seconds; second measure 8.31+/-4.84, third measure 8.62+/-5.09. Mean average break-up time (AvgBUT) that included the whole cornea, was; 10.71+/-3.17 (first measure), 10.83+/-3.31 (second measure), and 10.45+/-3.43 (third measure). The mean Sw (intrasession standard deviation) was for BUT1 2.72+/-2.07 and for AvgBUT 1.67+/-1.29. Mean coefficient on repeatability (1.96*Sw) was for BUT1 5.32+/-4.05 and for AvgBUT 3.27+/-2.53. Intraclass correlation coefficient was for BUT1 0.739 and 0.801 for AvgBUT
Conclusions:
The Tear Analysis module of the Sirius device provides consistent measurements of the tear break-up time (BUT)
