Abstract Details

Purpose:

A study carried out to determine the prevalence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome in patients aged 50 years and above attending the ophthalmology outpatient units in Rizgary and Erbil teaching hospitals in Erbil governorate..

Setting:

Hospital based study carried out at the department of ophthalmology, Rizgary and Erbil Teaching hospitals, Erbil, Iraq(2009). A total 620 patients of 50 years and above were examined for evidence of PEX and those with the disease were subjected to further examinations.

Methods:

A cross-sectional hospital based study. A total of 620 patients who were 50 years and above are included in the study. A detailed high magnification . Slitlamp examination is performed focusing mainly on the presence and distribution of pseudoexfoliation before and after mydriasis. A complete ocular examination was performed including IOP measurement, gonioscopy and dilated fundus examination. PEX was diagnosed clinically by the presence of typical PXM at the pupillary border before dilatation or anterior lens capsule after pupil dilatation.

Results:

Out of 620 patients, 100 (16.1%) were found to be having PEX syndrome. The disease was unilateral in 42 cases and bilateral in 58. There were 67 males and 43 females with male to female ratio of 1.3:1.23% of the subjects had high IOP. Of the 100 patients with PEX sundrome, 94 patients had cataract. There were no significant association between PEX syndrome and either Diabetes or Hypertension.

Conclusions:

To the best of our knowledge, this is the 1st study conducted in kurdistan region to determine the prevalence of PEX syndrome. It is a common disease in our population. A prevalence of 16.1% in patients aged 50 years and above was identified in this hospital based study. The prevalence increased with advancing age and bilateral disease was more common than unilateral disease. It was more frequently encountered with males than females. A high percentage of patients had high IOP, and narrow angles were observed in 12 patients. No statistically significant association was found between PEX, D.M, and HTN.
