Evaluation of the quality of life in patients with ocular hypertension or glaucoma with different levels of severity through the VFQ-25 test

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the relationship in a group of patients diagnosed with ocular hypertension or glaucoma, between objective measures of visual function and the subjective perception of the quality of life in relation to their eye disease.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet, Deparment of Ophthalmology, Zaragoza, Spain.

Methods:

Cross-sectional evaluation of the quality of life in 36 patients diagnosed with ocular hypertension or glaucoma with different levels of severity by the Hodapp glaucoma grading scale. A complete ophthalmological examination including visual field was performed in all the patients. The VFQ-25 (Visual Function Questionnaire) was used as assessment questionnaire in the quality of life. The scores obtained in the different sections of VFQ-25 (global vision, near and far vision, limited social and occupational function, etc.) among the four groups (ocular hypertension, mild, moderate and severe glaucoma) were compared. Likewise, VFQ-25 scores were compared by grouping the sample by gender.

Results:

No statistically significant differences in scores VFQ-25 between the four groups assessed were found. Differences in some sections of VFQ-25 between men and women were found.

Conclusions:

The assessment of quality of life is important and useful in monitoring patients with ocular hypertension or glaucoma. The subjective perception that the patient has of his disease and how it affects their quality of life seems to be directly related to the severity level of the same but with other factors.
