Abstract Details
Purpose:
Is to estimate the influence of applanation tonometry on results of keratometry and refractometry within young and old patients.
Setting:
Saint Petersburg city multi-field hospital № 2
Methods:
The observable patients divided in two groups based on their age.The first group consisted of 27 men and 18 women (45 patients,90 eyes) at the age of 21-35. The second group consisted of 3 men and 9 women (12 patients, 18 eyes) at the age of 60-75. All patients were tested by the Schirmer’s test and tear film break-up (TBUT) test in the 24 hours of research. On the next day patients had keratometry and refractometry on the TomeyCorp.RC-5000,after that they had applanation tonometry on Maclacov, second keratometry and refractometry in 5 and third keratometry and refractometry 15 minutes.
Results:
In 5 minutes after tonometry refraction reduction within 0,25-0,5D were marked in the first observable group in 22 cases, within 0,75-1,25D in 9 cases, refraction strengthening within 0,5-1,0D in 10 cases and unchanged in 4 cases.Main direction of astigmatism changed: 20–40°(9),within 10–15°(4),5–10°(30) and remained unchanged(2).In 15 minutes after tonometry results were nearly unchanged. In 5 minutes after tonometry refraction reduction within 0,25-0,5D were marked in the second observable group in 8 cases, refraction strengthening within 0,25-0,5D in 2 cases and within 0,5-2,0D in 2 cases.Main direction of astigmatism changed: 20–40° (7 cases),10–15°(3),5–10°(1) and unchanged (1).
Conclusions:
In order to avoid errors in IOL power calculation keratometry should be executed before the applanation tonometry. Dependence of fluctuation of keratometry and refractometry results on original state of tear film should be investigated further.
