Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the quality of vision in eyes submitted to femtosecond laser cataract surgery and multifocal intraocular lens implantation and to analyze how these technologies could offer more precise refractive outcomes

Setting:

Vista Monza, Eye Clinic, Monza, Italy

Methods:

A retrospective study was conducted in 400 eyes operated with femtosecond laser platform (Catalys; Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA) by a single surgeon between April 2015 and February 2016. Multifocal intraocular lens (Tecnis multifocal IOL, Abbott) were implanted in all the eyes. After one month postoperative, we studied the quality of vision in all the patients. We evaluated: far, intermediate and near best corrected visual acuity, anterior capsulotomy displacement, intraocular lens position and centration, the posterior chamber lens tilt. Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) was self-administered to all the patients.

Results:

We did not have any surgical complication. At one month postoperatively: 380 eyes (95%) did not require a prescription for eyeglasses, 280 eyes (70%) had a precise capsulotomies and effective intraocular lens positions and centrations, 20 eyes (5%) had posterior chamber lens tilts. Scores on the NEI-VFQ-25 indicated that participants do not perceived significative problems with their vision.

Conclusions:

Tecnis multifocal IOL and Catalys femtosecond laser platform offer high degree of patient satisfaction and better refractive outcomes related to a more precise capsulotomy and less posterior chamber lens tilt. Moreover a circular and centred capsulotomy does not ever influence the effective lens position and centration.
