Abstract Details
Purpose:
Examine and show the efficacy of arquate keratotomies (AK) performed with Catalys femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery platform.
Setting:
Instituto Oftalmológico Tres Torres, Spain
Methods:
An observational and analytic retrospective study was done in 77 consecutive eyes of adult patients who were performed cataract surgery with Catalys femtosecond laser in our clinic.
Out of the total, 36 patients (47%) were performed AK with the femtosecond laser depending on the preoperative keratometric astigmatism guided by an own nomogram. All the surgeries were done in patients with regular astigmatism, performing the AK in the steepest axis. The 58% of patients presented more than 1D astigmatism preoperatively.
Results:
The preoperative corneal astigmatism (M=1.10, SD=0.59) was statistically significant reduced (M=0.57, SE=0.14, t(36)=5.89, p<0.05, r=0.71) after performing AK with Catalys.
The astigmatism medium correction was about 0.53D, staying refractively with a cilinder of 0.61±0.36D.
In with the rule astigmatism we started from 0.74±0.36D reducing 0.69D±0.36D.
In against the rule astigmatism we started from 0.89±0.59D reducing 0.58±0.32D.
In the oblique astigmatism we started form 0.79±0.34D reducing 0.17±0.37D.
Only one patient out of the total (2.7%) maintained more than 1D astigmatism postoperatively.
No perforation or infection were observed.
Conclusions:
The astigmatism reduction is mandatory to obtain good unaided visual acuities postoperatively, specially in patients with multifocal IOL implantation. For that, the performance of arkuate keratotomies with femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery platform Catalys could be a safe and effective technique.
