Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate Femtosecond-Laser assissted cataract surgery using the LENSAR Laser in conjunction with an aspiration-only special handpiece for lens removal.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Center and the David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg

Methods:

The LENSAR Femtosecond cataract laser system (LENSAR, LLC) is a combination of a Femtosecond laser with a Scheimpflug-based diagnostic system. The anterior segment is analysed with a rotating Scheimpflug camera creating images that give information about corneal curvature and lens morphology including density of the cataract. Using the cubic-type pre-fragmentation mode of the LENSAR laser, cataractous lenses were treated and the contents of the lens were removed with a special irrigation-only handpiece (ZeroPhaco, Bausch + Lomb).

Results:

In contrast to bimanual I/A or monomanual I/A handpieces, this special handpiece for Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery has a similar configuration as a normal phaco-handpiece, but is not using ultrasound. With the LENSAR we could perform zero-phaco, aspiration-only surgery in cataract densities of up to +3, which could be easily identified with the LENSAR imaging system.

Conclusions:

The poster displays results and video-footage of lens-removal with an aspiration-only handpiece based on previous evaluation with the LENSAR Scheimpflug imaging system.
