Staphylococcus lugdunenesis isolates from ocular surface of diabetic patients who underwent cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Acute postoperative endophthalmitis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis is infrequently (6% of CNS) reported in clinical studies. However S. lugdunensis is known to be an aggressive coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. Our aim was detecting S. lugdunensis and its multidrug resistance rates prior to cataract surgery.

Anadolu University Faculty of Science, Department of Microbiology, Turkey

Methods:

After culture of the biological sample in brain heart infusion broth, Staphylococcus strains were isolated on blood agar plates (bioMe´rieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France) at 37°C in aerobic conditions for 24 h. Strains were then identified as being S. lugdunensis with ID32 STAPH strips (bioMe´rieux). Ribotyping was carried out with a RiboPrinter Microbial Characterization System. The isolates were evaluated for biofilm production according to a modified microtiter plate method. Slime production in CoNS strains was determined by cultivation on Congo Red Agar (CRA) plates. Antibiotic resistance patterns of strains were determined by using agar disk diffusion method.

Results:

We identified 12 S. lugdusensis isolates from ocular surface of diabetic patients who underwent cataract surgery. Six of the 12 isolates were strong biofilm producer. Eight (%66.7) of them were resistant to 3 or more antibiotics. Multidrug resistancy was correlated with strong biofilm formation capacity, however two of these 8 isolates were multidrug resistant even they were biofilm negative.All multi-drug resistant isolates were resistant to cefuroxime; however all isolates susceptible to Vancomycin.

Conclusions:

Nearly two third of the S. lugdunensis isolates were multi drug resistance, and these isolates were resistant to cefuroxime which is used as intra-camaral antibiotic. S.lugdunenesis should be kept in mind as an infrequent but agressive agent in post operative endophthalmitis especially in diabetic patients.
