Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report three cases of burkholderia cepacia endophthalmitis following uneventful phacoemulsification surgery.

Setting:

Mission Nethralaya, Shillong

Methods:

Three cases were reported with blurriness of vision after 2 to 3 weeks following phacoemulsification. Culture of vitreous tap confirmed the diagnosis. Pars plana vitrectomy with intravitral antibiotics injection was performed.

Results:

Despite several modalities of treatment two cases did not respond to intravitral antibiotics and vitrectomy. The first case ended up with phthisical and second case underwent evisceration. However one case improved after first dose of intravitral antibiotics injection.

Conclusions:

Burkholderia cepacia endophthalmitis is rare but difficult to treat. More researches are necessary to understand the course and outcome of the infection.
