Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the effectiveness of the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin in prevention and treatment of bacterial endophthalmitis.

Setting:

Eye Diseases Department, the Bashkir State Medical University, Ufa, the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia.

Methods:

The trial was led on 32 eyes of 16 rabbits of breed 'Chinchilla'. The animals of the first group were instilled 0,5% moxifloxacin solution 4 times a day. The ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin were put to the conjunctival cavities the animals of the second group. In control group animals were instilled sterile saline 5 times a day. On the second day of the experiment in the anterior chamber were injected 0.3 ml of S.aureus organisms. Time course of the inflammatory process guide was daily estimated with the help of biomicroscopy. Eyes of animals examined histologically.

Results:

In the control group of animals the development of acute endophthalmitis. In histological medications marked evidence of the inflammation process was observed: all phase of inflammation were identified. In the animals’ eyes of the first group the development of inflammatory process was reserved by the treatment, however the signs of residual effects presented. Histological picture: there was some evidence of inflammation process in choroid. There was no inflammation process in the eyes of the second group of rabbits. The histological investigation of the eyeball has not identified the evidence of the inflammatory process.

Conclusions:

Our experimental studies showed that the use of the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin has high preventive and therapeutic effect in acute inflammation process of the eyeball.
