Abstract Details
Purpose:
We report about unexpected corneal responses to crosslinking (CXL) and a massive remodeling effect that can occur after CXL.
Setting:
Milos Eye Clinic, Belgrade, Serbia.
Methods:
In our report we present the topography maps and refraction of a patient 8 weeks and nine months after conventional epithelium-off (epi-off) CXL, in which UV radiation of 3 mW/cm2 was applied for 30 minutes.
Results:
A strong reduction in steepest keratometry (Kmax) of up to 9.00 D and in central corneal thickness up to 230 microns could be observed in the difference map. It resulted in significant change of the refraction from –5dsph to +2dsph and worsens visual acuity (VA) during first months. The massive remodeling effect was also accompanied by the formation of mild stromal haze which has been almost completely resolved after six months.
After nine months the central cornea gained more thickness and became steeper as the topography maps could show. The uncorrected visual acuity was 0.7.
Conclusions:
Standard CXL can have surprising results which need more increased experience to be explained or predict.
