Optical densitometry changes after corneal collagen cross-linking treatment for keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the corneal light scattering characteristics and its changes after corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) treatment, using Scheimpflug imaging.

Setting:

Orbi-Dent Health and Laser Center, Debrecen, Hungary and Department of Ophthalmology, University of Debrecen, Hungary.

Methods:

39 eyes of 39 keratoconus patients eyes treated with CXL (mean age: 28.93±7.59 years) were examined before the CXL treatment, 1 week thereafter, and after 1, 3, 6 months and after an average of 2.5 years (1 year minimum). The optical density of the cornea were analyzed with the Pentacam HR densitometry module, in the anterior 120 µm layer, in the central layer and in the posterior 60 µm corneal layer, in 4 different diameters.

Results:

The densitometry value of the entire corneal anterior 120 µm layer was 21.12±4.53 GSU, 13.57±2.27 in the central zone, and 11.34±1.52 in the posterior layer before the treatment. All these data were lower than those of the age-matched values from a healthy database. In the first postop. month, the value of densitometry in the anterior and in the central zone increased significantly, then a slowly decreasing was observed until the end of the follow-up period (25.39±4.01 GSU; 16.15±2.67, and 14.58±3.11). At the end of the follow-up period, significantly higher GSU values were measured in all of the three zones (p<0.05) compared to the data before the CXL treatment.

Conclusions:

The corneal light backscattering values rise significantly after CXL treatment in all of the three tested corneal layers. The densitometry values showed slow decreasing during the follow-up period. Using the Pentacam HR densitometry module is a useful, objective method for analysing the optical quality of the different corneal layers.
