Corneal demarcation line depth changes after simultaneous topography-guided photoablation with collagen cross-linking for keratoconus

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the depth and extent of stromal demarcation line after simultaneous topography guided photoablation with collagen cross linking using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).
Setting:
National Ophthalmology Center after named academic Z.Aliyeva, Baku, Azerbaijan.
Methods:
The control group (30 patients, 60 eyes) consisted of patients with eyes with unoperated corneas. The second group (57 patients, 74 eyes) consisted of KCN patients previously operated with CXL which combined same-day phototherapeutic keratectomy epithelial removal and partial topographically-guided photorefractive keratectomy normalization of the cornea ectasia.
Results:
Mean corneal stromal demarcation line depth measured 300.67±51.56 mm (range, 240 to 385 mm) and 295.72±44.05 mm (range, 238 to 380 mm). The stromal demarcation line was visible with AS-OCT at 1 month after surgery in 70 eyes. A deeper demarcation line depth was associated with a larger decrease in corneal thickness (r = -0.498; P = .011). Central corneal thickness (CCT) decreased at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery when compared with 1 month after surgery. The decrease was significant only at 3 months after surgery (P=0.005). There was no significant increase in CCT measured using AS-OCT between 3 and 12 months after surgery.
Conclusions:
AS-OCT appears to demonstrate reproducible early (1 month) and long-term (up to 1 years) CXL cornea findings.
