Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess anterior segment parameters of keratoconus eyes at different stages using pentacam system

Setting:

Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Ophthalmology department,Tabriz, Iran

Methods:

Two hundred thirty eight eyes of 119 patients diagnosed with keratoconus (26 eyes had mild,63 had moderate and 124 had severe keratoconus) and 178 eyes of 89 age and sex matched normal subjects were evaluated with a Scheimflug camera.

Results:

There were no statistically significant difference between keratoconus and control group in anterior chamber depth (ACD),anterior chamber angle(ACA) and anterior chamber volume (ACV)(P<0.05).However there were significant differences in corneal volume (CV),keratometric reading back and front (Kb, Kf), thinnest corneal thickness(TCT) and maximum keratometric reading( K max) between keratoconus and control group(P<0.05). With the progression of the keratoconus ACD,ACA,ACV , CV,Kf,Kb, Kmax and TCT were statistically different between all subgroups(P<0.05).Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC)curve analyses showed ACA,ACD,ACV and CV had fair predictive accuracy and Kf, Kb Kmax and TCT showed excellent sensitivity and specificity in addition to excellent area under ROC(AUROC).

Conclusions:

parameters derived from corneal curvature and thickness and not from anterior chamber measurements very effectively discriminate keratoconus from normal cornea.
