Comparison of corneal biomechanical properties measured by CORVIS ST between Fuchs endothelial distrophy and healthy eyes

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the corneal biomechanical properties measured by Corvis ST of eyes diagnosed of Fuchs endothelial distrophy (FED) without clinical corneal oedema compared with healthy eyes. Intraocular pressure, pachymetry, first (A1) and second (A2) applanation features (time, velocity and length) and highest concavity features (time, deformation amplitude, peak distance and radius) were obtained.

Methods:
This is a prospective study. We recruited patients with FED without corneal edema from our cornea clinic that matched the ultrasound (US) central corneal thickness (CCT) measurement of our database of healthy subjects. Refraction, CCT, Goldmann tonometry and Corvis ST measurements were taken.
Results:
14 eyes that suffered from FED were compared with 36 control eyes. The mean age was 58.1±15.4 years for the control group and 69.3±13.1 years for the FED group (p=0.07). Biomechanical features that were found to be different between both groups were, CORVIS pachymetry (554±30.54 vs 588.5±41.7, p=0.02), highest concavity deformation amplitude (0.96±0.08 vs 8.63±1.03, p=0.0001), highest concavity deformation peak distance (3.83±1.16 vs 0.96±0.15, p=0.0001) and highest concavity deformation radius (8.76±1.07 vs 3.83±1.10, p=0.0001) in control and FED groups, respectively.
Conclusions:
The results from our study suggest a different corneal biomechanical behaviour in FED corneas without edema compared with CCT matched healthy corneas
