Experience of a contact lens clinic in fitting keratoconus patients with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGPL)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the corneal and RGPL parameters of a group of keratoconus patients and the correlations between them.

Setting:

The study includes 49 eyes of 30 consecutive patients with keratoconus.

Methods:

Corneal topography was performed with OCULUS Keratograph 5M and patients were fitted with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. Corneal radii and RGPL base curve radii were recorded and correlated.

Results:

The mean flat corneal radius was determined to be 7,23 ±0,43 mm (min:6,34 max:8,16), the steep radius- 7,07±0,49 mm (min:6,12 max:7,83), the mean radius - 7,15±0,4 mm (min:6,36 max:7,95). The mean base curve of the rigid gas-permeable contact lenses was found to be 7,32±0,33 (min:6,60 max:8,00), the mean dioptric power - -4,47±3,93 dpt (min: -16.00 max: +2.5). No significant correlation was found between RGPL power and corneal radii (R mean corneal radius/RGPL power = -0,129 p=0,376, R flat corneal radius/RGPL power = -0,241 p=0,095, R steep corneal radius/RGPL power = 0,003 p=0,982). There was a stronger, although not significant correlation between RGPL base curve radius and steep corneal radius (R=0.276 p=0.055).

Conclusions:

The corneal radii, found on corneal topography do not necessarily correlate with the best fit RGPL base radius.
