The influence of sinustrabeculectomy on corneal astigmatism

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Corneal astigmatism is one of the reasons that may cause a temporary reduction of patient’s visual acuity, who had a sinustrabeculectomy. PURPOSE is to estimate the influence of sinustrabeculectomy on corneal astigmatism and to observe the alteration of its dynamics during the postoperative period.

Setting:

Saint Peterstburg multi-field hospital № 2

Methods:

retrospective comparative analysis The observable group consists of 42 patients, who had a sinustrabeculectomy (21 female and 21 male, overall 42 eyes, with the average age of 67±6,59 years). All patients had a keratometry on autokeratometer Topcon-8800 before the operation, in first twenty-four hours and in 30 and 90 days after the surgery. Received results compared with presurgical data, which comparison was the basis of estimation of alteration of the corneal astigmatism dynamics.

Results:

Sinustrabeculectomy induces the corneal astigmatism, which was 2,13±1,13 D in first twenty-four hours after the surgery. Than it reduced to 0,66±0,53 D on the 30th day and to 0,53±0,38 D on the 90th day after the surgery. Yet in some cases, it exceeds 1 D (in one month in 31% and in three months in 19% of all cases).

Conclusions:

Sinustrabeculectomy induces the corneal astigmatism, which retrogresses to presurgical level in 81% of all cases, yet every fifth patient has it’s exceed to 1 D in three months after surgery.
