Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare graft outcomes following pterygium excision surgery between umbilical cord blood UCB and standard fibrin glue.
Setting:
Bina Eye Hospital, Tehran , Iran
Methods:
Thirty eyes of 28 patients underwent pterygium excisionwere included in the study. The eyes were split into two groups of 15 eyes each to analyze either the UCB fibrin glue (produced in Royan Institute for the first time in Iran and from umbilical cord blood for the first time in the world) or the Beriplast® P Combi-Set fibrin glue. Patients were examined for complete loss of graft, incomplete dislocation of graft, graft hyperemia, bleeding under the graft, post-operative pain, and other side effects. Patient follow-up was 3 months after surgery.
Results:
There was no graft loss in the Beriplast fibrin glue group, while there were 3 cases of graft loss in the UCB group in the first postoperative day. There were no significant difference in the levels of bleeding under the graft and graft hyperemia between the two groups at last follow-up (P value = 1.00). Moderate pain was reported by one patient in the Beriplast group and no patients of the other group (P value= 1.00). There were no recurrences in the Beriplast group after 3 months, while 2 patients in UCB glue group experienced this side effect; the difference between the two groups was not significant.
Conclusions:
There was no significant difference between the Beriplast and UCB fibrin glues in pterygium surgery. UCB is suitable glue for use in pterygium surgery.
