Keratoplasty indications from 1999-2015 at a tertiary referral centre in Athens, Greece

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Aim of the present study is to analyze the course of keratoplasty indications at a large cornea reference center FROM 1999-2015.

Setting:

First Department of Ophthalmology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece

Methods:

The present series includes all patients undergoing keratoplasty from 1999 to 2015 at a tertiary referral center in Athens, Greece. Main outcome measures were the annual incidence of diverse keratoplasty indications.

Results:

1270 keratoplasty procedures performed by 4 surgeons were included. Mean recipient age was 61.4 ± 4.7 years. “Top 3” indications were: bullous keratopathy (BK, 36.5%), allograft rejection (17.7%) and corneal scar (12.8%), followed by keratoconus (KC, 10.8%), Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (FED, 7.7%), corneal melt (6.1%), infectious keratitis (5.9%) and stromal dystrophy (2.4%). BK and FED showed an increasing, whereas KC and stromal dystrophies a decreasing trend. Allograft rejection, corneal melt and infectious keratitis showed an overall stable course.

Conclusions:

Endothelial pathology (BK and FED) showed an increasing trend as a keratoplasty indication over the last 16 years. This could be attributed to the advent of endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK and DMEK) which is safer and renders better results than penetrating keratoplasty.
