Abstract Details
Purpose:
We report case of ocular air bag injury resulting in localised endothelial decompensation.
Setting:
Drishti eye insitute ,Cornea services
Methods:
A 50 year-old woman presented to our outpatient department after sustaining oculofacial injuries due to deployment of an airbag in a motor vehicle accident. She had a visual acuity of 6/6 in right eye and 6/18 in left eye. Initial ocular exam revealed features of blunt ocular trauma to the left eye which included lid edema, corneal abrasion, localised central corneal edema and a mild anterior chamber reaction. Rest of the ocular exam was unremarkable.
Results:
An anterior segment OCT revealed descemets folds with corneal edema.Patient was started on topical antibiotic steroids, lubricant and cycloplegic agent. On third day low endothelial count (CD= 1430/ mm3) with loss of normal endothelial morphology was noted. At one month, Visual acuity recovered to 6/6 along with an improved endothelial count (CD= 1850/ mm3). However, pleomorphism and polymegathism persisted.
Conclusions:
Patients with endothelial decompensation should be made cautious about the risk of corneal endothelial decompensation following intraocular procedures like cataract surgery in future.
