Corneal topographic patterns in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the differences in Galilei Scheimpflug-Analyzer parameters between patients with OSA and normal population. Correlations with OSA Severity and length of follow-up were also studied.

Setting:

Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain.

Methods:

Patients who underwent polysomnography testing at the hospital sleep unit were enrolled. Patients were classified according to OSA severity and time of diagnosis. Corneal topographic elevation indices were measured with Ziemer 6.0.2 Galilei topography.

Results:

Ninety eight patients (196 eyes) were included: 22 patients with normal polysomnography test, 21 patients with mild OSA, 20 patients with moderate OSA and 35 patients with severe OSA. Twenty six topographic indexes were analysed. Percent probability of keratoconus (PPK) of axial anterior curvature was higher in patients with OSA (all severities) than in patients with no OSA (5.33% vs 2.61%, p<0.05). There was no difference in PPK of patients with OSA related to length of follow-up (p<0.05). Group with moderate OSA showed higher astigmatism of anterior axial curvature than group with severe OSA (1.29D vs 0.78D, p<0.05).

Conclusions:

OSA patients showed similar corneal topographic patterns compared to patients without OSA, independently from severity and length of follow-up.
