Corneal densitometry and its correlation with age, corneal curvature and refraction

Purpose:
The aim of this study was to determine normative corneal densitometry related to age, gender, refractive error and keratometry in a large group of participants, measured by Oculus Pentacam® System
Setting:
Innova Ocular Group, Spain
Methods:
Three hundred and sixty seven patients (199 men; 165 women) participated in this study. All participants were subjected to an exhaustive ocular examination. Corneal densitometry was obtained with Oculus Pentacam®. Densitometry measurements were expressed in standardized grayscale units (GSU).
Results:
The mean corneal densitometry over the total area was 16.46 ± 1.85 GSU. For total densitometry the Pearson’s correlation coefficient was r = 0.542 (p < 0.001). Statistically differences men and women were found for the total area. When the cornea was divided in different depth layers, a significant correlation was found for all layers. However, when the cornea was divided in concentric annulus only was found a strong correlation of densitometry with age in 6-10 mm annulus (p < 0.001). No correlations were found between mean keratometry or spherical equivalent with corneal densitometry in any zone of the cornea.
Conclusions:
This is the first report of normative corneal densitometry values related to age, keratometry and spherical equivalent measured with the latest Oculus Pentacam® system software. The corneal densitometry increases with age, but the corneal keratometry and the refractive parameters do not affect light scattering in the human cornea
