Ocular surface assesment in maturity-onset diabetes of the young

Purpose:
To assess the ocular surface in patients with Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY).
Setting:
Diskapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey
Methods:
Patients with MODY referred to Genetic Diagnostic Center in Diskapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital from January 2014 to January 2015 were included in the study. Ocular surface changes were evaluated using ocular surface disease index questionnaire (OSDI), Schirmer-I test, break-up time (BUT), corneal fluorescein, Lissamine green staining and mebiography.
Results:
The mean time of MODY diagnosis was 5.0±5.5 years. The mean HBa1c level was 5.5 (range; 4.8-6.5) and none of the patients had any signs of diabetic retinopathy. OSDI score was 13.41±13.09 in group 1 and 14.58±10.34 in group 2 (p=0.76). Mebomian gland drop out was similar between 1 group 1 and group 2 (%12,04±10,41 and %10,43±7.5) (p=0,21). Mean shirmer test values were similar between group 1 (29,7±7,9 mm) and group 2 (26±8 mm) (p=0.16). The mean invasive BUT was 10.56±4,1 and 12±2,78 in groups 1 and 2 (p=0.36). Mean fluorescein corneal staining was 1,57±2,89 and 0,17±0,39 in groups 1 and 2 (p=0.09).
Conclusions:
MODY might not have an affect on the ocular surface. It might be depended on the young age of patients with MODY, short time of MODY diagnosis and good regulation of the diabetes.
