Abstract Details
Purpose:
This study was conducted to describe the safety and efficacy of overnight orthokeratology among myopic patients in Taiwan.
Setting:
Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital
Methods:
One hundred and thirty-four eyes of 68 patients (aged from 12 to 54) were enrolled in the 10-month pilot study. The myopia of all eyes was between -1.00 D and -4.00D, and astigmatism was under -1.50 D. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE), corneal topography, slit-lamp examination, intraocular pressure (IOP), subjective complaints and corneal endothelial cell count were collected in the 9-month wearing duration and after discontinuation for 1 month. The data was analyzed to determine the safety and efficacy of overnight orthokeratology.
Results:
The UCVA (Snellen chart) was better than 0.8 in 100% of eyes, and better than 1.0 in 98.51% at 9 months. The central corneal curvatures of all eyes became flatter and static at the 3rd month till discontinuation. No significant change in UCVA, MRSE and corneal curvature was noted one month after discontinuation. Except for 15 eye (1.4%) appearing corneal stainings, no serious adverse events occurred during the study. Four eyes (0.37%) had foreign body sensation and 29 eyes (2.71%) complaint of unstable vision. No eye had worse BCVA. The corneal endothelial cell counts and IOP had no significant change in the study.
Conclusions:
The results indiacated that overnight orthokeratology is safe and efficacious for mild to moderate myopia in Taiwan patients.
