Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the relationship between Schirmer I test results and tear meniscus height (TMH) measured by Keratograph 5M (K5M) in limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) patients.

Setting:

We studied LSCD patients diagnosed according to Dua clinical criteria belonging to the Ocular Surface Unit of Virgen Macarena and Virgen del Rocio Hospitals (Seville, Spain).

Methods:

38 patients (76 eyes) were analyzed with a mean age of 54.63 years. Each subject underwent Schirmer I test without anesthesia using Farris technique modified by Vitali. In addition, ocular surface was evaluated by K5M with the TF-Scan that determined TMH in three points: middle, nasal and temporal area and calculated the average. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson coefficient to establish the relationship between both variables.

Results:

Mean values were 9 (2,2-15)mm for Schirmer I test and 0,22 (0,17-0,39)mm for TMH measured by K5M. No statistically significant correlation was found between both Schirmer I and TMH (r= 0.026, p= 0.837)

Conclusions:

Schirmer I test and TMH measured by K5M are not correlated in LSCD patients.
