Compare the two preventive methods used in corneal complications in patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Patients in intensive care units are prone to dry eye and ocular complications. For prevention of corneal damages, treatment of dry eye started. This study aimed to compare the two methods in control of ocular damage in patients who admitted in ICU during 2015.

Setting:

ICU of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences

Methods:

This observational study was conducted on 120 patients, divided in two groups (antibiotic drops with ointment, and adhesive tape with ointment). Ocular complications were observed between the two groups. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and chi-square and Fisher tests.

Results:

Ninety six patients (80%) had ocular complications. The most problem were conjunctivitis, 34 (28.3%). In patients who received the adhesive and ointment (22 patients), the most damaging effects of dry eye was corneal abrasion 8(36.4%). In drop and ointment group (72 patients) the most frequency was conjunctivitis 24(33.3). Statistically difference was observed between the two groups with ocular complications. (P <0.001).

Conclusions:

Adhesives and eye ointment in the prevention of corneal damages is more effective than drops and ointment. Care instructions with ointment and adhesive tape for trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) is recommended.
