Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate role of oval capsulorhexis for phacoemulsification in eyes with posterior polar cataract (PPC) with pre-existing posterior capsular rupture (PCR).

Setting:

Daljit Singh eye Hospital, Amritsar, Punjab, India

Methods:

Phacoemulsification was performed in 15 eyes of eight patients of PPC with PCR using oval capsulorhexis over 6 years. The technique of phacoemulsification used was phacoaspiration in nuclear sclerosis (NS) grade 01 and stop and chop in NS 02 to 04. Intraocular lens was placed either in capsular bag or in ciliary sulcus with anterior capsular capture.

Results:

Mean age -53 years; Male:Female - 9:6. Grade 01 to grade 03 nuclear sclerosis was present in 12 eyes and grade 04 was present in 3 eyes. All underwent successful phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation. Anterior vitrectomy was required in two eyes. Single piece foldable acrylic IOL was implanted in the bag in 11 eyes and single piece PMMA intraocular lens was implanted in ciliary sulcus with anterior capsulorhexis capture in 4 eyes. None of the patients had nuclear drop. The mean preoperative best corrected visual acuity was 20/200, which improved to 20/40 postoperatively.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification using oval capsulorhexis is an effective and safe tool for phacoemulsification of posterior polar cataract with pre-existing PCR.
