Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety, pros and cons of using microdacin (solution of hypochlorous acid) as an alternative to povidone-iodine during cataract surgery.

Setting:

Elblaski Szpital Specjalistyczny, Poland

Methods:

In group A (59 eyes) povidoneiodine was used for skin and eyelid washing (10%) in the morning and before surgery and 5% povidoneiodine for intraoperative conjunctival irrigation. In group B (51 eyes) microdacinⓡ was used instead of the povidoneiodine solutions. In both groups perioperative 0,5% levofloxacin and intracameral cefuroxim ware administered. Observation of the patients was carried up to 3 months post surgery.

Results:

There was no significal difference in the incidence of endophthalmitis between both of the groups. In group B eye irritation was smaller. An advantage of using a clear solution in group B was no staining of medical appliances.

Conclusions:

Microdacin could be an alternative to povidoneiodine solution for perioperative care of patients during cataract surgery. Further studies should be carried out.
