Abstract Details
Purpose:
Design new follow-up protocol for non-complicated cataract surgery and analyze its clinical safety.
Setting:
Study was carried out in Manises Hospital in Valencia, Spain.
Methods:
Patients who underwent non-complicated phacoemulsification surgery from September 2015 to January 2016 were included. Postoperative instructions were given and patients were instructed to instill Tobradex® (tapering schedule treatment) and alarm symptoms were explained. Phone call was performed to check clinical status 24 hours after surgery and one postoperative appointment one week after surgery was performed. Data collected were, number of patients: who needed more than one appointment, who came to emergencies, who needed more than one surgery, who came back up to two months after surgery, and who needed posterior ophthalmologic follow-up; and number of ophthalmological complications secondary to phacoemulsification.
Results:
694 surgeries were performed, 2.45% (17) were excluded and main cause was complicated phacoemulsification. Non-severe complications were observed, being corneal edema the most frequent complication one week after surgery. 95.95% (667) patients were discharged of cataract surgery. 81.84% (557) were completely discharged and 18.16% needed posterior control of other ophthalmic pathologies. 5 patients came to ophthalmologic emergencies, burning eyes was the main complaint (99.00%). 30 patients came back to clinic up to two months after surgery, burning eyes and refraction were the main complaints.
Conclusions:
New postoperative follow-up protocol with single appointment one week after surgery is safe and effective for non-complicated phacoemulsification surgery. Furthermore, this protocol reduces medical appointments, improving healthcare administration, enhancing patient comfort and reducing workload in clinic.
