Purpose:
To share clinical outcomes after implantation of new segmental refractive multifocal intraocular lens(IOL).
Setting:
Prospective
Methods:
One hundred forty six eyes of 92 patients were enrolled in this study. Segmental refractive multifocal IOL (Lentisⓡ Comfort was implanted to all subjects. After 1 and 6 months manifest refraction, uncorrected distant visual acuity(UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UIVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA) were evaluated. Contrast sensitivity were checked and subjects completed a questionnaire on outcomes satisfaction, visual symptoms, and spectacles use 1 month following cataract surgery.
Results:
Uncorrected distant visual changed from 0.34 to 0.95 1month following surgery and remained unchanged after 6months. UIVA and UNVA were 0.93 and 0.57 at 6months. Patients who answered good or excellent at distant, intermediate, near were 77.3%, 85.3%, 51.3%. Although subjects who need spectacle were 14.7%, 6.9% at distant and intermediate, 48.3% answered they need glasses to read book. One fourth of subjects felt photic symptoms like glare or halo. Subjects answered to overall satisfaction on surgery was 32.2% excellent, 48% good, 14.4% average, bad 3.4% and very bad 2%.
Conclusions:
New segmental multifocal IOLs provided good distant and intermediate visual outcomes. Although that is designed for intermediate vision, over half subjects had enough vision to read book. Contrast sensitivity test showed the result equivalent to that of monofocal IOLs and only one fourth of subjects complained photic symptoms. Overall satisfaction of patients was high. Patients dissatisfied showed pathology like corneal opacity, irregular astigmatism.
This low add, segmental multifocal IOLs will be useful to various plan of cataract surgery improving surgical outcomes and patient’s satisfaction.
