Visual and refractive outcomes in toric intraocular lens implantation

Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes of eyes implanted with toric intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey
Methods:
The records of the patients who underwent toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation between May 2013 and March 2015 in our clinic were reviewed retrospectively. Phacoemulsification with implantation of AcrySof Toric IOL (Alcon Labs, Fort Worth, Tx) was performed in 24 eyes of 15 patients with the corneal astigmatism of 1.25 D or greater. The uncorrected (UDVA) distance visual acuities, residual refraction status and IOL rotation degrees were evaluated. Patients whose follow-up were shorter than 6 months were excluded.
Results:
Mean age was 65.95 ±9.40 years (range, 50-81 years), mean follow-up time was 16 ± 3.96 months (range, 12 - 24 months). At sixth months after the operation, mean spherical equivalent was -0.10 ± 0.28 D and the mean uncorrected visual acuity level was 0.03 ± 0.04 logMAR. The mean refractive cylinder decreased from 2.58 ± 1.07 D to 0.44 ± 0.18 D. At last follow up visit, the mean axis deviation from the intended axis was 4.16 ± 2.01 degrees and the surgically induced astigmatism was found as 0.39 ±0.19 D.
Conclusions:
AcrySof Toric IOL implantation is effective and safe in correcting corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery.
