Abstract Details

Purpose:

The Lentis Mplus is the first available rotationally asymmetric IOL. This lens provides patients with better vision of far and near focal point (40cm). The newly designed Lentis Mplus X has been released to enhance and extend the entire depth of focus with additive paraxial asphericity and surface design optimization. It is now more pupil independent and provides best reading performance. We compared visual outcomes between Lentis Mplus and Lentis Mplus X.

Setting:

Retrospective case series, Tane Memorial Eye Hospital, Osaka, JAPAN

Methods:

This study includes 190 eyes of 134 patients (mean age: 58.0±13 years old) with cataract. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: Lentis Mplus (Toric) (group M; +3D: LS-313MF30/LU-313MF30, Oculentis GmbH) were implanted in 118 eyes, and Lentis Mplus X (Toric) (group X; +3D) were implanted in 72 eyes. The main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), manifest refraction spherical equivalent, uncorrected visual acuity at several distances (30cm, 50cm, 1m, 3m, and 5m), defocus curve, and contrast sensitivity was performed preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively.

Results:

The mean postoperative monocular UDVA were -0.054±0.13 logMAR in the group M and -0.054±0.09 logMAR in the group X, respectively. Uncorrected distance visual acuity at 3m and 5m was not significantly different between 2 groups. Group X had significantly better uncorrected intermediate visual acuity than M group at 30cm, 50cm and 1m.(group M; 30cm=0.083, 50cm=0.118.1m=-0.09, group X; 30cm=0.09, 50cm=0.085, 1m=-0.06) (P<0.05). Defocus curves of the both IOL are relatively flat at the intermediate distance, and near defocus curve of the Lentis Mplus X is extended than Lentis Mplus. Contrast sensitivity was not significantly different between 2 groups.

Conclusions:

The new rotationally asymmetric lens (Lentis Mplus X) shows good visual performance not only in far and intermediate distance but in near distance, and also deeper focus depth.
