Anterior chamber angle and intraocular pressure changes following uneventful phacoemulsification in non-glaucomatous eyes over 1 month

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate changes in anterior chamber angle (ACA) and intraocular pressure ( IOP) after an uneventful phacoemulsification followed by IOL implantation in non-glaucomatous eyes. We also evaluated the association between changes in ACA and IOP.
Setting:
Laxmi Eye Institute, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Methods:
Prospective study comprised 114 eyes, who underwent phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation performed by single surgeon using standard surgical technique. ACA and IOP measurements were taken preop and postop on day1, wk1, and wk3. AS-OCT used to measure ACA and GAT for IOP measurement. Data were analysed using Stata 11.
Results:
Significant increase in the mean ACAs Postop day1 compared with pre-op(p<0.001). For IOP, a transient increase in the mean levels (day1 post-op), following which the mean levels reduced; the reduction at Wk 3 was significant (13.58 vs 15.10, p<0.001).
Conclusions:
After uneventful phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation, the ACAs (nasal and temporal) increased significantly. Increase in the temporal angles were associated with a significant mean reduction of IOP. There was a transient rise in IOP in immediate postoperative day but the IOP decrease was significant over 1 month follow-up.
