Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops following cataract surgery in comparison to topical steroids

Setting:

Fayoum university hospital , Beni Suef university Hospital , Egypt

Methods:

This study comprised 80 patient with cataract cataract extraction and PcIOL implantation was done.patients divided in two groups ,group A 40 patients receiving topical NSAIDs , group B 40 patients receiving topical steroids . Patients were examined postoperatively on days 1, 7, 14,,21,28and 42 day .vision ,intra-ocular pressure was assessed .fundus and full ophthalmic examination was done at each visit. anti-inflammatory efficacy was assessed by lid edema, lid injection, conjunctival injection, corneal edema, ciliary flush, and anterior chamber cells. Analgesic efficacy was assessed by patient self-rated pain severity, pain frequency, total symptom sum and overall global improvement

Results:

Both treatments produced comparable reductions in intraocular inflammation and pain after cataract surgery and results indicate that NSAIDs leads to more rapid visual recovery. As for IOP NSAIDs had greater success in controlling IOP postoperatively .

Conclusions:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs is safe and effective when used in the post-operative management of uncomplicated cataract surgery. It appears to be as effective as a topical steroid without the risk of elevated IOP,increase suscepility of infection. We recommend using topical NSAIDs to prevent inflammation and PCME after routine cataract surgery.
