Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the problem of standards-based ophthalmosurgical equipment, as well as initiate the creation of the working team in order to elaborate the principles of the ophthalmosurgical modular platform with open architecture, standards for different modules and universal connectors for instruments.

Setting:

UNLIMITER. Universal Ophthalmosurgical Modular Platform. Conception of the creation of the working team for elaborating the parameters of the ophthalmosurgical modular platform with open architecture.

Methods:

From year to year ophthalmosurgical equipment is getting faster, thinner, more sophisticated as well as more expensive. At the same time, we cannot always possess everything what we expect. The options, as a rule, are limited by the proposal of producers. In the most cases, unfortunately, possibilities for upgrading the equipment are limited too. In the XX century, the rapid growth of the computer technology was due to the platform with open architecture, created by IBM. Finally, with the benefit of that fact, computers very rapidly turned out to be faster, more powerful and profound as well as chipper.

Results:

The ophthalmological platform will be, in the nearest future, a body, made according to unique demands and containing a key computer, a monitor, an uninterruptible power supply, and a line of pressed air. A consumer will be able to choose modules from different manufactures, precisely: an irrigation and an aspiration module, a module for phacoemulsification and vitrectomy, light source, footpedal, laser, cryo and so on. Every module will be controlled by the mutual computer and footpedal. In order to upgrade the available equipment it will be enough to change appropriate modules for ones that are more sophisticated.

Conclusions:

The main purpose of the article is the creation of the working team combining ophthalmologists, scientists, technicians, manufacturers in order to scheme out principles of the universal modular ophthalmosurgical platform with open architecture. The results of the work would be standards for irrigation, aspiration, phaco and vitreomodules, light source, footpedal, laser, cryo and universal connectors for instruments. Buying new ophthalmosurgical equipment consumer will be able to choose appropriate platform and suitable modules from different manufacturers. Competition between platforms, modules and instruments’ producers will help to reduce price of the equipment and consumables.
