Precision IOL guide: a new contact lens-based device for guiding manual capsulorhexis and IOL centration and axis alignment

Abstract Details
Purpose:
A well-centred capsulorrhexis of appropriate size is felt to be important for optimal IOL positioning and performance. IOL centration and axis alignment is also very important. We have developed a new device based on an inscribed contact lens to assist manual performance of these essential tasks.
Setting:
Design, manufacture and prototype testing has been carried out in Australia. Clinical testing was performed in various accredited surgery centres by eight different surgeons.
Methods:
Design and materials testing were done in collaboration with Swinburne University. Manufacture was done by an approved contact lens laboratory and the lenses were laser etched. Ethylene oxide sterilisation was performed.
Results:
A total of 8 experienced cataract surgeons have trialled the prototype. All found the device easy to use with good clinical outcomes for manual capsulorrhexis and IOL alignment. The device was found to be less annoying than video based surgical guidance sysytems.
Conclusions:
This simple contact lens based guide may be of use to surgeons performing manual phacoemulsification, who wish to optimize their surgical outcomes.
