Accuracy and feasibility of axial length measurements in dense cataracts by a new biometry device

Purpose:
To evaluate axial lengths (AL) measurements accuracy of a new low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR) based device, in eyes with dense cataract.
Setting:
Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Zerifin, Israel
Methods:
Retrospective series of consecutive cases of eyes that had undergone successful cataract surgery and had preoperative and postoperative biometry measurements by the IOLMaster (Ver 5.4, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) and the OA-2000 (Tomey, Japan), and that their AL couldn’t be measured preoperatively by the IOLMaster device due to dense cataract, were enrolled. The bland and Altman method was used to evaluate the agreement between the preoperative AL values measured by the OA-2000 and the postoperative values measured by the IOLMaster, A one-sample t-test was used to assess whether the difference between the mean measurements was different from zero.
Results:
Twenty-four eyes of 24 patients were enrolled in the study. Preoperative AL measurements (OA-2000) were feasible in 20 eyes (83.3%). The mean difference between the preoperative (OA-2000) and postoperative (IOLMaster) AL measurements was -0.08mm ± 0.06 [95% CI = -0.11 to -0.06], p < 0.001.
Conclusions:
The OA-2000 had a high number of successful AL scans in eyes with dense cataract in which preoperative IOLMaster AL scans were impossible. These measurements were considerably precise and accurate compared to the postoperative AL measured by the IOLMaster.
