Evaluation of an electronic toric marker compared with slitlamp marking for cataract surgery

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare accuracy of an electronic toric device in marking the axis of astigmatism before cataract surgery compared with manual slitlamp marking.
Setting:
Ophthalmology, Hospital General Universitario de San Juan, Alicante, Spain
Methods:
This prospective clinical study included 39 eyes undergoing cataract surgery with coexisting corneal astigmatism. Eyes were randomly assigned to 2 groups, main incision was made in the steepest meridian. In group A, the steepest axis was marked with an electronic device (Electronic Toric One Step Marker, Asico) held frontally. In group B the horizontal meridian was marked at the slitlamp. Intraoperativelly, the steep meridian was marked using a second device. The difference from the reference axis was calculated using a very narrow slit aligned with the triangular internal mark of the incision done with the point of the knife.
Results:
The electronic toric marker (A group) had a difference of 3.58º (standard deviation 1.4º) from the reference axis. Eyes marked manually with the slit lamp (B Group) had a difference of 7.12 (standard deviation 3.72º) (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
Astigmatism axis marking was more precise with the Electronic One Step Marker. Additionally, this electronic marker was, in our hands, easier and faster to use than manual slitlamp marking.
