Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine whether heating a thermosensitive IOL and/or the ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) used in the inserter before surgery will make the lens more foldable/smaller and thus suitable for microincision cataract surgery (MICS).

Setting:

Centre Ophtalmologique Iridis

Methods:

Prior to standard phacoemulsification, the Micropure 123 GFree IOL (PhysIOL SA, Liege, Belgium) was heated in one of five ways: OVD without packaging in the oven (Group 1); OVD with packaging in the oven (Group 2); OVD and IOL without packaging in the oven (Group 3); OVD and IOL with packaging in the oven (Group 4); and no heat to either OVD or IOL (Group 5). The IOL was inserted using the Medicel Viscoject Bio 1.8; the corneal incision was measured using sterile gauges before and after lens implantation.

Results:

There was no significant difference in temperature (°C) of the oven between groups. Only the group OVD without packaging box had a higher room temperature than the group OVD and IOL without packaging box. Within each group there was no statistical significance in preoperative versus postoperative incision size. However, there were significant differences between Groups 1 and 2, Groups 3 and 4, Groups 1 and 3, Groups 1 and 5, Groups 2 and 5, and Groups 3 and 5 (all p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Applying heat to the OVD and/or the lens can increase the foldability of a thermosensitive IOL for use in MICS.
