Evaluation of correlation between axial length and phaco parameters

Purpose:
We purpose that correlation between axial length and phaco parameters in phacoemulsification surgery
Setting:
Prospective Clinical Study
Methods:
A total of 254 patient underwent uneventful phaco surgery operated by same surgeon by same technique and with the same phaco machine were evaluated. Each patient’s axial length measured preoperatively, phaco parameters such as total phaco time, effective phaco time and phaco percentage were recorded. Patient who had history of any ocular surgery included perforation, penetration, retinal detachment surgery or some one who has any systemic disease that effect on sclera structure were excluded from the study. Kolmogorov Smirnov and Spearman correlation tests were used.
Results:
The mean axial length was 23.40mm while the median was 23.28mm (min 20.72- max 31.19). The axial lengths were not normally distributed (p:0.01) The mean total phaco time was 75.15 sec and the median was 69.75 sec (min 6.5-max 513) which was negatively correlated with axial length but the correlation was not statistically significant. ( r:-0.02 p: 0.64) The mean effective phaco time was 23.30 sec and median was 42.56sec ( min 1.1-max 418) which was also negatively but not significantly correlated with axial length. ( r:-0.03 p: 0.61) The mean phaco percentage was 17.63 % and the median was 17 % (min 3-max 40%).
Conclusions:
Even axial length and the each phaco parameters seems to correlated none of the correlation was statistically significant. For this subject further studies with large number of patient are needed.
