Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of phaco parameters in diabetic eyes and normal cataract eyes for differences in terms of TPT(total phaco time),EPT(effective phaco time) and PP(phaco percentage).

Setting:

One hundred and eighty two patients with cataract and without any other disease (Normal group:NG) and seventy one eyes with cataract and diabetes (Diabetic Group :DG)

Methods:

One hundred and eighty two patients in Normal group (NG) and seventy one eyes in Diabetic Group (DG) which were underwent uneventful phaco surgery operated by same surgeon by same technique and with the same phaco machine were included in this study. Patient who had history of any ocular surgery or trauma, eyes with congenital anomalies some one who has any systemic disease rather than diabetes mellitus were excluded from the study. Each patients intra operative phaco parameters such as total phaco time (TPT) , effective phaco time (EFT) and phaco percentage (PP) were recorded.

Results:

The mean TPT was 74.89 sec and the median was 69 sec (min 10-max 382) in DG while the mean mean TPT was 37.69 sec and median was 20.60 sec (min 1.1 – max 198) in CG. The difference was statistically insignificant. (p:0.62) The mean EFT was 43.05 sec, median was 24.65 (min 2.3 - max 330) the difference was not significant either (p:0.42). The mean PP was 18.04% and the median was 17% (min 8-max 33) and it was 17.49% and 17 % (min 3-max 40) respectively in CG. All differences was not significant either.

Conclusions:

Phaco parameters in uneventful phaco surgery was not different in patient with diabetes mellitus than normal subjects.
