Macular thickness changes at third month after phacoemulsification

Purpose:
To compare macular thickness before and after cataract surgery using ozil versus ultrasound phacoemulsification technique.

Bagcilar Education and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic
Methods:
A prospective study was conducted on 158 eyes of 104 patients who had phacoemulsification. This study was comprised of consecutive eligible cataract patients operated with phacoemulsification technique performed by the same surgeon. using either a machine. Phacoemulsification was performed ozil vs ultrasound technique with infiniti. Group 1 was operated with Infiniti ULTRASOUND type handpiece (transversal) and group 2 was operated with Infiniti OZil IP handpiece (torsional) . Measurements of macular thickness were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at 1. week and at 3. month using the OCT technique.
Results:
The 104 patients had a mean age of 71 ± 6.7 years. Baseline characteristics in the groups were similar. Group 1 has 54 patients and group 2 has 50 patient. The median nuclear sclerosis grade was 2 (2-4) in the first group and 3 (2-4). The mean macular thickness at baseline were 224 ± 67 μm in group 1, and 220 ± 62 μm in group 2 (P >0.05). At third month the mean macular thickness were 235 ± 70 μm in group 1, and 233 ± 68 μm in group 2 (P >0.05). There was statistically significant difference in macular thickness between baseline and third month (P<0.05), but there was not statistically significant difference between two groups (P >0.05).
Conclusions:
Mean macular thickness increased after cataract surgery with phacoemulsification, but the phacoemulsification technique is not effective on changes of macular thickness.
