Abstract Details
Purpose:
Cataract surgery is a safe procedure nowadays, with complication rate as low as 2.3 %. However, pseudophakic retinal detachment (PRD) remains a vision threatening complication which occurs in 0.15 – 0.8 % of cases after cataract surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate age, sex, and period of time between cataract surgery and retinal detachment in patients with PRD.
Setting:
The study was a retrospective analysis of patients’ medical records in Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital Eye Clinic. All of the patients were operated for PRD.
Methods:
Patients’ sex and period between cataract surgery and PRD were evaluated in different age groups (≤ 49 years, 50 – 59 years, 60 – 69 years, and ≥ 70 years). We divided patients according to period of time between cataract surgery and PRD (< 2 years, 2 – 5 years, 5 – 10 years, >10 years). We used nonparametric Chi-square test to compare different patient groups. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS statistical software package, version 17.0.
Results:
The study included 119 patients - 73 males and 49 females (p>0.05). Mean age was 63.4(10.9). Fifteen cases were ≤49 years (12.6 %), 34 cases were 50 – 59 years (28.6 %); 37 cases were 60 – 69 years (31.1 %); 33 cases were > 70 year (27.7 %). Mean time from cataract surgery to PRD was 3.9 (4.3). In 47.2% of patients PRD occurred within 2 years after cataract surgery comparing to 2 – 5 years (25.9 %), 5 – 10 years (17.6%), > 10 years (9.3%); p<0.05. There was no significant difference in time from cataract surgery to PRD between age groups.
Conclusions:
There was no difference in PRD occurrence between sexes with predominance of male. Great majority of operated patients were of older age. No difference of period from cataract surgery to PRD within all age groups was observed and nearly half of cases presented in the first two years.
