Effect of diclofenac sodium in preventing cystoid macular oedema after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate rate of developing Cystoid macular Oedema(CMO) after catract surgery with and without post opertaive treatment with Diclofenac Sodium (Voltarol).

Setting:

Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre which is private heath care provider on behalf of nationa Healt Service, UK.

Methods:

Over last ten years all patients who underwent cataract surgery were treated with Dexamethason (Maxidex) eye drops over four weeks post operatively together with one bottle of Diclofenac Sodium eye drops three times daily until the bottle lasts which could be a period of two to three weeks. Since August 2015 we stopped giving Voltarol eye drops and during this time 1090 cases were operated by a single surgeon and 10 cases developed CMO( Cystoid Macular oedema) . In exact similar period between August 2014 to March 2015, 1283 cases were operated and only one case of CMO was noted.

Results:

There is a minimum of 10 folds increase in CMO an the group of patients who received post operative treatment with Diclofenac Sodium eye drop compared to the group who didn’t received this eye drops.

Conclusions:

Diclofenac Sodium is effective in preventaive CMO by 10 folds post cataract surgery. No patient developed any serious allergy or side effect of this eye drop.
