Vitrectomy and secondary lens implantation after phacoemulsification complication: results and visual outcome

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate the outcome of vitrectomy after phacoemulsification complication. With the rise of numbers of phacoemulsification as the preferred surgical method for cataract , there has been an increased incidents of posterior dislocation of lens fragments

Setting:

accurus vitrectomy, infiniti

Methods:

we have treated 50 patients from other clinics and 5 from our Clinic with vitrectomy for the past 1 year. Patients come with reduced visual aquity ( 80 % with less than 0,1 and 20 % with 0,5 ), glaucoma 5 patients, retained lens material in 50 patinets, subluxated IOL in 35 patients, retinal detachment in 5 patients and posterior uveitis in 4 patients.

Results:

we performed vitrectomy in 55 patients. Secundary lens implantation in 20 patients and reposition in 15 patients. Final visual outcome was 0,5 or better in 41 patients , 9 patinets with 0,1-0,4 , 5 patients less than 0,1. Cystoid macular oedema was observed in 3 patients , atrophy of PNO in 2 patients. Retinal detachment occurred only in 1 patient and endothelial loss in 2 patients .

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery complications must be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible by vitreoretinal surgeon. Retinal detachment and glaucoma are the biggest threats for visual aquity. The appropriate management and different approach is the key for successful outcomes for this patients
