Abstract Details

Purpose:

A customized method, the measurement of the lacrimal meniscus (menivol). Is diagnosed through the analysis of 4 groups of patients subject to premium surgery. 1.- myopic patients which had gone through Lasik procedures, 2.- myopic PRK patients, 3.- patients with intraocular lenses implanted, and 4.- control group not submitted to any ocular surgery. The results were statistically analysed.

Setting:

University Quirón Madrid Hospital, c/ Diego de Velazquez 1, Madrid

Methods:

1.- The meniscometry, menivol, is analysed measuring the height of the tear meniscus through OCT and the application of a personal formula used for finding the volume of the tear meniscus. Group I myopic patients treated with Lasik, 20 cases Group II myopic PRK patients, 20 cases Group III intraocular implant surgery, 20 cases Group IV control group, no surgery, 20 cases All measurements were taken three months after any surgical procedure, and once topic treatments had been suspended for 1 month at least. A statistical analysis for menivol clinical validation was performed using a linear regression analysis.

Results:

the lower tear meniscus volume measured with menivol (personal formula in TM) in the 4 groups analysed was better in patients of cataracts and in the control group than in refractive surgery of the cornea as an average. The non-invasive break-up time in seconds was better in the control group than in the rest of the surgical groups. The height of the meniscus in mm was equivalent in all groups analysed.

Conclusions:

We have proven, validated and designed a new and simple formula, called “menivol“, which allows to calculate the volume of the lower tear meniscus. There is a P< 0.05 correlationship between the lacrimal volume of the lower meniscus and the rest of parameters studied. In corneal surgical procedures, the volume of the meniscus is reduced as compared with the results obtained through implant surgery.
