Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess clinical results of LASEK as retreatment after SMILE corneal refractive surgery.

Setting:

Retrospective case series.

Methods:

We evaluated all retreatments performed after primary small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism performed between 2012 and 2016 in two surgical centers by three surgeons (RW, MB, DK). For retreatment of postoperative ametropia, laser assisted epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) was chosen. Time between primary surgery and retreatment had to be at least 3 months.

Results:

30 eyes of 20 patients were retreated with LASEK using Mitomycin C. Initial mean spherical equivalent of eyes retreated was –6.72 diopters. Persisting postoperative ametropia retreated was myopic astigmatism in 28 eyes and mixed astigmatism in 2 eyes. Mean absolute spherical postoperative ametropia was 0.75 dpt, mean cylindrical postoperative ametropia was 0.47 dpt. All LASEK procedures were performed without any intraoperative complications. Three months after retreatment 2 eyes had lost one line of CDVA, in 12 eyes CDVA remained unchainged, 14 eyes gained one line of CDVA and 2 eyes gained two lines of CDVA.

Conclusions:

Our retrospective study shows good safety and efficiacy of LASEK as retreatment option for minor postoperative ametropia after primary SMILE procedure. However, one should anticipate that visual rehabilitation process in these cases takes longer compared to primary LASEK surgery.
