Abstract Details

Purpose:

Aim of this study was to clinically evaluate dry eye manifestations after PRK and LASIK and to analyse the incidence and factors of chronic dry eye.

Setting:

Garg Eye Institute and Research Centre, Hisar-India

Methods:

In this prospective non randomized clinical study,we included 40 patients undergoing PRK and 40 patients of LASIK in other group.Dry eye analysis was performed before surgery and after surgery on 1st postop. day and after 2 weeks,4 weeks,12 weeks,24 weeks and 52 weeks. The surgery was performed for PRK and LASIK by the same surgeon.

Results:

In this study comprising 40 patients each of PRK and LASIK aged 27.8+/- 3.5 years with myopia or myopic astigmatism. The schirmer scores, ocular surface staining, corneal sensitivity,SRI and dry eye symptoms analysis significantly changed over 24-52 weeks after PRK.After LASIK,clinically significant changes were recorded in tear break up time, corneal sensititvity,OSS and dry eye analysis.Regression analysis recorded that preop. lower schirmer score significantly increased the development of chronic dry eye after PRK while lower schirmer score ,higher OSS score significantly increased the occurrence of chronic dry eye after LASIK.

Conclusions:

Chronic dry eye was normally not common after PRK and LASIK. Ocular surface and tear film analysis during preop. examination shall help to predict chronic dry eye symptoms in PRK and LASIK.
