Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse repeatability of keratometry using the Verion Image Guided System (Verion, Alcon Inc.) and to compare keratometry and intraocular lens (IOL) calculation with established biometric devices.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Methods:

In this prospective, monocentric study one eye of 150 ophthalmologically healthy volunteers was examined with the Verion Image Guided System, IOLMaster 500, Lenstar LS900 and Pentacam HR. For determination of repeatability of keratometry, the Verion measurement was performed three times. Corneal radii (R1, R2, R) and white-to-white (WtW) were measured with all 4 devices, axial length (AL) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) only with IOLMaster and Lenstar. IOL power calculations for Acrysof SN60WF IOL using 4 different formulas as well as corneal radii and WtW were compared between the devices.

Results:

The Verion (n=123) measured significantly larger R1 and R than the IOLMaster, not significantly different values than the Lenstar and significantly smaller R1, R2 and R than the Pentacam. The WtW values were significantly larger than those of all other devices. The analysis of repeatability of the Verion showed high intraclass correlation coefficients (> 0.9). For IOL calculation (n=136), the Verion calculated significant larger values in comparison to IOLMaster but no significant differences compared to Lenstar. In both groups the surgeon would have chosen the same IOL power in approx. two thirds of cases when using the Verion.

Conclusions:

The Verion Image Guided System showed a very good repeatability of keratometry. WtW values measured with the Verion were significantly larger compared to the other devices. IOL power calculation using the Verion revealed statistically significant differences when compared to IOLMaster, but not when compared to Lenstar. The clinical relevance of these results remains to be evaluated.
