Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the effect of three-dimensional (3D) printed personalized moisture chamber spectacles (PMCS) on the periocular humidity.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

Ten normal subjects were enrolled. Moisture chamber spectacles were consisted of frame, side panel, silicone chamber and moistened sponge block. Side panel and silicone chamber formed semi-closed spaces around eyes. Inner side panel equipped moistened sponge block provided additional humidity through passive evaporation. PMCS was designed based on volume rendered facial computed tomography images and produced using a 3D printer. Width and length of frame and side panel, contour of silicone chamber were personalized. Periocular humidity of PMCS and commercially available uniformed moisture chamber spectacles (UMCS) were measured via micro-hydrometer.

Results:

The mean ambient humidity was 15.76 ± 1.18 %. The mean periocular humidity of PMCS (52.14 ± 3.00 %) was significantly higher than UMCS (37.67 ± 8.97 %), (P=0.000). PMCS always demonstrated lower value than condensation humidity.

Conclusions:

PMCS made by 3D printer provides appropriate fitness for the semi-closed humid chamber. PMCS showed higher performance than UMCS. The wearing of PMCS seems to be an effective method to provide high enough periocular humidity in low humidity environment.
